Why Spanish companies are looking to the Russian build & interiors market

Known for their high-quality products and cutting-edge innovations, Spanish brands are highly-valued on the Russian build and interiors market.

Among many others, some of the materials exported to Russia include building stone, ceramics, and sanitary ware equipment.

Despite recent economic sanctions imposed by the EU on Russia, there is huge potential for growth in the fields of trade and investment between Spain and Russia, which was one of the main takeaways from a recent meeting of the Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation between the two countries. The meeting also highlighted the importance of small and medium enterprises in the business relations between Spain and Russia.

In terms of the build and interiors market, many Spanish firms are well-established and see Russia as a key part of their operations. These include, among many others, sanitary ware companies Roca, Nofer, Acquabella, Industrias Cosmic, and Alvaro Banos, painting tools supplier Pentrilo, paints and coatings manufacturer Monto Pinturas, and ceramics equipment manufacturer M.A.I.C. Technicos.

Valve and fittings manufacturer Standard Hidraulica, which also operates in Russia told us: “We’re investing a lot in this market, Russia is one of the most important markets for our company. It takes 3 to 4 years to enter a new market to develop the brand and relationships. Spanish products have a positive value in Russia as a lot of Spanish producers are recognised and established here. It is a very good time to develop projects here as the economy in Russia is giving signs of positive development.”

Well-known bathroom product manufacturer Roca has been working in Russia for over a decade and has learned how to thrive on the market. They’ve been able to expand by building a new warehouse in the east of the country. Key to this is building strong relationships both with industry professionals and with representatives of local and regional governments.

Speaking to Forbes, Director Antonio Linares said: “We’ve never had big difficulties moving forward with our business plans because we feel we have support from the government.” He added that strong relationships were “very important for us when we first arrived ten years ago.”

Ceramics tiles

One area Spain can really infiltrate the Russian market is with ceramics. Ceramic tiling makes up the largest sector of the Russian flooring market – 38% in 2017. In terms of imports, around 30% of all ceramics tiles used in Russia are currently sourced from abroad. With Spanish tiles popular for their reputation of quality and style, there is plenty of opportunity for growth in this key sector.

In fact, Spain's leading ceramics companies are set to showcase their products under the brand Tile of Spain at Russia’s leading building and finishing materials exhibition MosBuild 2019 next April.
